Attorney General Dale Marshall highlighted the rising trend of firearm-related murders in Barbados, even during years when overall murder rates declined. Citing statistics from 1987 to 2024, he pointed out that firearm killings have significantly increased, with 34 out of 49 murders in 2024 involving guns.
Marshall praised The Barbados Police Service (TBPS) for its efforts in removing illegal firearms, noting that 359 guns were seized between 2021 and 2024. However, he acknowledged that the extent of the impact remains unclear due to ongoing illegal imports. He criticized the previous administration for not addressing the lack of working scanners at the Bridgetown Port, which contributed to the smuggling problem.
While emphasizing that the crime surge did not happen overnight, Marshall urged patience, stating that resolving the issue will take time but will not require decades.
